It is this process that allows us to see the bubbles. The leaf needs to expel the extra oxygen along with water. The leaf is using the sunlight as part of the photosynthesis process to create energy. Eventually these bubbles will rise to the surface because air is lighter than water. You can look with the naked eye, but you could use a magnifying glass too!Ħ-Do you see bubbles around the leaf? Those are oxygen bubbles the leaf is breathing out. Put a little rock on top so that it is fully submerged.Ĥ-Put the bowl in direct sunlight and wait a few hours.ĥ-Observe the leaf in the water. (not off of the ground)ģ-Put the leaf in the water.
Note: you can collect a very big stick to use as a classroom activity and use rope instead of string.ġ-Find a living leaf from a tree. Tie a piece of string around each item you collected and hang each item from the stick. Tie a string to each end of the stick and hang the stick on the wall.
